St. Jude India Childcare Centres USA

I participated in this year's San Francisco Marathon to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude India Childcare Centres USA (SJICC USA). 

SJICC USA primarily supports St. Jude India ChildCare Centres (SJICC) in India. SJICC provides a ‘home away from home’ for economically challenged children undergoing cancer treatment in 11 Indian cities - Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Vellore, Visakhapatnam, Varanasi, Guwahati and Muzaffarnagar. SJICC has affiliations with hospitals such as Tata Memorial Hospital, KEM Hospital, Wadia Hospital, ATREC Hospital, AIIMS, Sarojini Naidu etc. 

The heart wrenching story-

These largely "below poverty line" cancer-affected kids, accompanied by their parents, relocate from their rural/semi-urban homes to one of these 11 cities to undergo cancer treatment in a specialized hospital. Cancer treatment is long, and the child is generally an outpatient. Clean and safe accommodation is unaffordable, and they often live on the pavements where they don't have means or access to healthy meals, toilets/bathing facilities. Kids who are already low in immunity because of their chemotherapy/radiation treatments, either succumb to secondary infections or the dejected and demoralized families abandon the treatment and return to their homes, without curing cancer.

And now for the good news-

Childhood cancers are highly curable provided that the cancer treatment is supported by an infection-free, hygienic environment with proper nourishment. And that's where SJICC steps in to provide every such family with free accommodation, shared kitchen & hygienic, nutritious food, clean and hygienic toilets/ bathing spaces and free transportation to hospital while the child and their parents are staying with SJICC. The ‘home away from home’ is a hygienic, protective, nurturing environment which gives the children the best chance of beating cancer. SJICC creates a community for the families, who come from all over India, speak different languages and represent all communities, but share the common goal of getting their child treated for cancer.
